Breeding canaries in the same cage?
i want to get a pretty big cage to house three canaries. i want to put two females and one male to breed. the male would only be put there during breeding season and otherwise have a separate cage. will the male breed with both of them? will the canaries fight? will they be able to raise the chicks? I know that some times the females have to raise them by themselves so i don't know if the male will have a problem feeding two nests. there will be plenty of food and water in multiple containers. there would be at least four different nests.
Its hard work on the male to look after two hens. yes he can fertilise the eggs for two hens but feeding the chicks from two nests will be hard. He will make a choice and look after one or make himself sick trying to look after two nests. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com
I have known hens to sit and keep chicks warm but wait for the dads to come feed the chicks. If the dad is busy with another nestful of chicks and another hen the extra nest of chicks doesnt get fed and the chicks die.
Best you have one male to one female....not one male to two females.
