How do you stop a bird from perching on your shoulder?
I recently acquired a 2 year old Quaker Parrot. The previous owner allowed the bird to perch on his shoulder. I do not agree with letting a bird perch on your shoulder and none of my other birds are allowed to do so. How do I correct this behavior? As soon as I get him out of the cage he attempts to walk up my arm and perch on my shoulder when I try to remove him he tries to bite me.
Birds like to be up high. Get or make a perch for him that's a little higher than your shoulder and transfer the bird to that every time it goes on your shoulder and it should be happy. You can get pieces of small wood from a lumber / hardware store and just nail the perch to a wall sticking out from a corner or a cupboard. put in at least two nails so the perch doesn't swivel.

Don't punish it or yell at it...the poor thing has been taught for its whole life that the shoulder is the place to be. It's previous owner probably blew air on it, and even fed it and talked to it lovingly while it was on their shoulder. If you don't ever interact with it while it's on your shoulder and only while it's in other places, it will gradually learn.

Or you could give it to someone who won't mind it perching on their shoulder.
it may be hard, because the previous owner probably worked long and hard to allow him to be brave enough to perch there :P. not sure why you dont want him to?

what i would do, is when he tries to do that, say "no" (not yelling but firmly) and put him back in the cage for a minute or so and ignore him. give him treats when he does good :)

eDiT: also, make sure you arent just ignoring him, and that you are giving him lots of love and attention, because it isnt fair to deny him contact. to me he just sounds friendly. maybe you will find that you enjoy him hanging out with you on your shoulder :)
Put something on your shoulders so the bird has no space there. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

Its also not good to keep birds on the shoulder since height is power in the bird world, they also tend to get more "bossy"

Also, does the bird have an area of his own to perch outside the cage? Find a playgym with a perch, toys and bowls. Like a cage without bars. Spend time with the bird there, make the bird feel comfortable and happy there.
