Will a cockatiel talk if.....?
i have 2 parakeets right now and i was thinking about getting a cockatiel. but i was wondering that if i got one and tried to teach it to talk, would it be more focused on my parakeets chirping and singing than on what im saying to it. thank you :)
the most you will get out of a male tiel is pretty bird but they are great whistlers female tiels don't talk or whistle, the budgies won't be distraction
First of all make sure you purchase a male cockatiel if you are planning on teaching him words. Your other birds won't hurt the process, once you and your cockatiel form a friendship he will be much more interested in mimicking you. In any case keeping him in the same room as your other birds is a good idea and will keep him from becoming bored and/or lonely.
As stated by the others, only the males will whistle & possibly talk. Most pet stores won't be honest about which is which, so you need to spend some time with their birds to figure out which ones are really males. Usually whistling to them, gets them whistling right back (if they are old enough). pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com
You may wish to have them in separate cages & rooms, however, I personally had a flight cage the entire length of my dining room that housed 4 breeding pairs of tiels along with 3 parakeets....all was well :) The male tiels just naturally want to be with humans, and will pick up on the whistles you make:)
