Will Chickens Eat Their Own Eggs ?

Will Chickens Eat Their Own Eggs ?
I have 7 laying hens.
I went out to Feed Them about 11:00 am
At that time there was 4 eggs.
My wife likes to bring in the eggs so I left them out there.
She went out to get the eggs at 4:00 pm there was only one.
Are the chickens eating them or is someone stealing them ?
Someone is probably stealing them.

Even if they would eat them, you'd see broken remnants of the eggs, or at least some of the stain from the eggs being cracked open because a chicken cannot swallow an egg.
It could be that you have eggeaters (unfortunately it's a hard problem to solve) or you could have a pest stealing them. The only real way to know is to set up a camera.
Well I do know this: If an egg ever accidentally breaks open and a hen tastes it that is it. She will eat he own eggs. Same way with a dog. Do you have a dog who could be eating them? I honestly doubt someone is stealing them (why would they risk it and why wouldn't they take them all?) but you never know!

I have chickens and my dad had them when he was a kid and told me this.
Some chickens will eat the eggs of an unsuspecting hen. If the culprit one of your fowl, make sure everybody get plenty of feed & maybe add some protein.

Of course someone else may steal them too: dog, mongoose, or whichever weasel you have where you live. Put your videocamera in the coop.

has chickens
The short anwswer is yes, chickens will eat their own eggs. Once they get the taste of eggs it's almost impossible to fix. If you have dogs and they access to the coop they could easily steal eggs. Rats will too. I highly doubt you have a major preditor stealing eggs, they would go for your chickens before they would mess with the eggs.
