I have a question about my canaries?
I have two, I thought I had a girl and a boy, but now I think the girl is the boy and the boy is the girl... as an egg was laid and I had caught them mating the other day... confusing
anyway, the egg was laid this morning in the birdseed, it was blue-ish, the 'boy' (???) has been sitting on it and i made a nest and put the egg in there, but now they are not even goin near it
when i moved the egg i noticed it was broken and had a teeny little yolk in it
ahhh someone plz tell me if i did the right thing or not? theyre bith pulling the new nest apart, and now my son has just walked in and told me they (the birds) threw the egg on the bottom of the cage and smashed it more.
They have broccoli, seeds, and cuttlefish and water and some spray thing in their cage, am i doing everything right? will she lay more eggs? was it just a period? do i have a girl and a boy or 2 girls??

im so confused, please help
answer: well my mom have these two couple carnies for the past 5yrs and i would say that the "boy" that is sitting in the nest and made the nest is the GIRL! girl canaries are usally in charge in making the nest and also nesting the egg.The boy canary job is to feed the girl bird while she is heating her egg in the nest. The egg must be heated around 85degrees so if your bird lays the egg during winter/cold season its highly unlikeyly that the egg will hatch due to cold temp.
Oh and the reason why the birds dont want the egg that you touched is because you simply touch it..for some reason the birds think its not there anymore or they think you did somthing to it..idk why but that also happened my mom birds when she also touched them. Once they lay their egg(s) dont bother moving their nest or else they would get mad and end up thowing it away. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com
Also the reason why they tore the nest and threw the egg is b/c the bird has a feeling that the egg will not hatch-false egg- (it takes approx.1month for a egg to hatch) but birds can tell whether or not their eggs is still alive.if its a false egg basically she throws it away and tores up the nest so that next time she does have another egg, her nest will be better and hopefully her egg wont fail. They think their egg fails b./c of the nest but somtimes its b/c of the weather or when the carnies dont nest the egg long enough to keep it warm.
sorry for so much writing but this is how my mom carnies were exactly 5yrs ago
and this year they had there very first baby carnary.
btw you dont have 2girls or else they wouldnt have any eggs and they would fight alot

ialso researched awhile back so if you need more info you can google your questions or you can always contact me:)
hello pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com
i think that what you have done is very wrong because canaries don't lay eggs in nest boxes and they hate any body to touch there eggs they think that the egg has been polluted
and the break in the egg may be from you while transferring it to the nest box because their eggs is very soft
So don't do this again
