Here's a site that talks about diseases you can get from birds.

In addition, I add my personal experience: I had cockatiels for years. All birds produce feather dust and dander and also a secretion they use to coat their feathers with. It does get in the air and on everything around. If you only have a couple of birds, it may not bother you. You may not even notice it unless you have allergies. Some people are allergic to it like others can be to cat saliva and dog dander. If you have asthma, it can be harmful.

For most people it is not . I had a sort of rescue site for cockatiels and people would drop me off birds that they didn't want or that they found. Once I had as many as 20 birds at once. My lungs started to become congested and I eventually found homes for all of them. I didn't start out being allergic to them, but developed it over time. I don't keep them anymore.

I still love birds very much, but I don't believe in keeping them anymore. Birds belong in nature. Unfortunately most pet birds that we get can't be set free in their circumstances because they haven't grown up being taught by their parents to survive in the wild and this environment doesn't suit them , they come from other, warmer climates. I learned too much about them from having them and I don't think it's fair to keep them.

Birds are very social animals and grow up in a group and like to be in a group by instinct. If you decide to get them, don't only get one, when you are not there, it will be unhappy and can get sick from stress and loneliness. Either get two or don't get one at all.

Hope that answers your question.

Sure there's always the possibility that the bird will carry disease, but as long as you pick out a bird that:

1. looks healthy and bright eyed
2. moves around and hangs with other birds (if there are any)
3. puts up a BIG fuss when you try to get him out

I don't think you'll have anything to worry about:)

ive had an amazon parrot for 25 years and he hasnt gotten sick once. they are sturdy animals. and its rare for them to carry diseases. the only thing really is TB. when i had mono i was tested for TB, just because i had an exotic bird.

some might
