My budgie in a drafty place?
Hi Guys,
I have a pair of lovebirds and a pair of budgies. The lovebirds i got 2 weeks ago and the budgies i got 2 days ago. I keep both cages in 2 different rooms right in front of the window. The windows are open in both rooms. It is 90 degrees Fahrenheit or 33 degrees Celsius here. My lovies are fine but my budgies seem to be shivering a little. Is it because they are stressed. My lovies take a bath every other day and love it. The budgies i sprayed with a water bottle yesterday. They were flying around at first but then didn't seem to mind. This bath time for cages is still in front of open windows. Is it ok to keep them in front of open windows?
thx
answer: 1) Drafts are not good for any bird.
2) I don't agree with the statements about the temperature not being healthy for them. Budgies are from the Austrailian outback where it gets very hot in the day and very cold at night. 90 degrees F in the day is well within their tolerance range. If it wasn't, then no Budgie would live in the wild where they do. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com
3) Yes, they "shiver" and puff up after being bathed. This is no different than how a dog will throw water off it's fur by shaking.
4) Spraying them is fine - mine squawked like mad when I did it - I sprayed them with a Hartz product that helped oil and shine their feathers - but I agree not to "surprise" them when they are relaxed, and I recommend doing this no more than once a week (and even that may be more than necessary).
5) I recommend moving the Budgies to another location, away from the draft.
No dont keep them next to the open window, wind isnt good for them, they originate from australia which is a hot place so having them in a colder place isnt their ideal choice, plus you should let them have their bath when they feel they want to, dont start randomly spraying them especially when they are having a rest/nap
Placing a budgies next to open windows wouldn't be the best choice.Budgies are very sensitive to drafts, that is one of the possible reason they shiver. Its pretty normal for budgies to shiver after being bathed, they do that to puff up their feathers to keep themselves warm .
90 degrees is a bit too high for budgies, and the draft may not be good for them. If I were you, I would turn up the air conditioning. If you can't, move your budgies away from the window and away from the draft.
