Can I leave seed for Wild Birds?
Hi all,
I was just wondering If I am allowed to leave out seed for wild birds in my backyard?
I have noticed some willy wagtails in my backyard but also some 28's (parrots) and other wild birds in my area, Would i be able to buy wild bird seed and leave it outside on one of those terracotta pot plant plates that are supposed to catch the excess water? so basically a terracotta plate?
Also-I have a short billed corella and two budgies so I already have seed, would i be able to put some seed of both in the plate? wouldn't the birds just pick at what they want?
One more thing-Where should I put it?
Regards,
Daniel

answer:
Hi Daniel if you have a platform about your chest height something 60cm x 60cm and attached on top of a pole or make use of something else if you only put the food out when home and bring in at night will stop spoilage and also avoid attracting rats

another option is hang a feed bowl from a tree limb for a start and if you get more birds coming the the platform could be made then. pets question and answers,www.5d2d.com

Once the birds get to know the routine you can feed at the same time all the time im not kidding.
I know in an outer suburb in melbourne the rainbow lorikeets all come at the one time huge number and very noisey at eat all the seed and shoot through afterwoods.

The feeding is done from a bigger platform set up like the one i sugested. you make up yourself.

And why not, if you want to feed the birds in your backyard "Good on you" wild bird seed is the ideal thing then you will be able to feed a variety of birds, but the Willy Wagtails do not eat seed but soft fruit and alike would feed them.

The birds will eat all the seed that they can get their beaks into.

There would be no harm in using the terracotta plate but remember when rains the seed will be in water and do not forget seed can also attract vermin and unwanted animals ..
